This month has been insane. There have been so many high points, along with the inevitable low points that come with life. I don't even know where to start. After CAS week, there were a bunch of deadlines I had to meet for almost all of my classes. There were tests, oral presentations, assignments and essays, but at the end of all that I was high on life. Everything was done, I had a weekend with very little work to do, and even though that was such a nice feeling of relief, I didn't know what to do with myself! All the days, weeks and months that we've been here have rolled together in my memory to make one ball of good, bad and everything in between. I've spent entire days doing nothing but getting lost in Downtown Victoria, or riding a bike to a national park that we weren't really sure how to get to. We've swam in a freezing lake at sunset, lay in bed all afternoon and watched TV shows and celebrated birthdays of people who we're so close to, but 3 moths ago we'd never met. Today is Afro-Carib regional day and we're sitting in the sun doing homework. There was a brunch this morning, and this afternoon there are workshops for us to learn about Africa, the Carribean, and all the culture that comes from those places. (edit: it's now Sunday (day after Afro Carib) And Afro Carib was so cool! The theme was an African wedding for Nholva (Malawi) and Kamene (Kenya) so we had a fancy dinner and there was a show afterwards. The show was so amazing! There were dances, poems and songs, and then afterwards there was a party. Recently, I've finally had the time to chill out, to sit back, think about things and re-realise how amazing it is to be here. I think a lot of the time we get swept up by life, especially at Pearson because we're always so busy, and we forget to appreciate our surroundings. An important thing to keep in mind when you're surrounded by tough classes, sleep-deprived teenagers and looming deadlines is why you applied in the first place. Why are we here? Why did we choose to embark on this huge adventure? I think the answer to all of those questions is different for every single person, at UWC or anywhere else, but it is important to keep your reasons in mind. There have been so many adventures so far, and I can't wait for more! Tomorrow we're going ice skating as a house (Japan House for the win!!) which will be interesting because obviously, coming from Australia, ice skating is my calling. The other day we went kayaking out in the bay and saw some super cool things! There was a giant piece of driftwood that I tried to climb on and paddle home, I'm sure you can imagine how that went. But because of our delay in getting out to the mouth of Pedder Bay, we were there at the right time to see a bald eagle swoop down, dive into the water and swim back to shore paddling with its wings. It had caught a Great Blue Heron and dragged it up the rocks so that it could dry off before flying away. It was such an amazing thing to see up close, we would have been about 10 or 15 metres from the rock. We also saw a bunch of harbour seals, which are common, but you don't often see them out of the water on a rock. In the water they look a darkish grey colour, but out of the water they're almost white with darker patches. We saw a bunch of adults with a few pups, and as we paddled past they watched us for a bit before sliding into the water and swimming away. A storm started coming in so we paddled home, I was freezing because I'd gone in the water trying to get on the log so it was an interesting day. I'm getting super hyped to go to London, it's coming up quickly! Although before that happens, I have a fair bit of work to get done and a few deadlines to meet. I hope you all have a great week, and I'm doing my best to stay in touch! Love to everyone, B
